Autonomous boat Ericsson 230China Mobile ended 2018 with 551,000,000 4G NB-IoT connections and expects to add 300,000,000 in 2019. It has covered 99% of the country with NB-IoT and is far ahead of anyone else in the world. 4G will totally dominate telco IoT for many years. IoT in 5G really is a form of the 4G tools. The marketing people are trying to hide that fact.

CM is building an ecosystem that is expanding outside of China. It recently signed a deal with Singtel. The software is from Huawei, which is rapidly building a worldwide cloud.

The Huawei/Deutsche Telekom cloud is growing rapidly and extending across most of Eastern Europe. The company has opened a node in South Africa as well. Nothing's been announced, but DT & CM are both planning to offer IoT around the world through partners. 

That IoT requires 5G is a fantasy encouraged by 5G vendors. The autonomous boat in the picture was demonstrated at Mobile World Congress 2019 in Barcelona. The press release below notes the companies won an award for "Most Popular 5G application" despite the fact that it is designed for 4G.

Shane Eleniak, Calix VP, is designing and deploying advanced home gateways. He confirms,   5G will allow more connections, literally a million per square kilometre. Very, very few locations will need that density for many years. 

5G terminals are more expensive and require more power. Wi-Fi, Zigbee, or Bluetooth will usually be a better choice.

Broadband IoT Smart Vessel with China Mobile and OceanAlpha

Making waves at Mobile World Congress 2019 this week, Ericsson is showcasing an award-winning Smart Vessel industrial use case – operating remotely on commercial 4G broadband. The use case is a joint development of Ericsson, China Mobile and OceanAlpha.

Ericsson has revealed an award-winning industrial use case at Mobile World Congress 2019 this week, demonstrating the first steps of how 4G and 5G connectivity can benefit our planet and improve society.

The use case, a Broadband IoT Smart Vessel, demonstrates an unmanned vessel operating remotely over a 4G network. Showcased as part of Ericsson’s evolved Cellular IoT solution, the smart vessel harnesses the increased capacity and lower latency of forthcoming networks to perform operations in almost real time. Following pre-defined GPS routers, the vessel operates autonomously – collecting water quality monitoring data, identifying the cause of the pollutant with HD cameras and taking necessary measures to address these pollutants. The smart vessel can be remotely steered to the desired location in a pollution or accident area for close monitoring and takes necessary actions to overcome pollutants.

This use case – running on a commercial 4G network – has been jointly developed with China Mobile and OceanAlpha, the leading and largest unmanned surface vessel company in the world. The remotely-controlled machine is just one example of the billions of smart devices which are widely expected to be enabled by 5G over the coming years.

Earlier this year, Ericsson unveiled the next steps in the evolution of cellular IoT and launched new solutions that will enable service providers to address a larger part of the IoT market with diverse use cases across multiple industries.
